About Our Chapter
The Portland, Oregon Chapter 47 members come from the greater Portland/Vancouver area. Currently, the members represent five Schools of Ikebana: Ikenobo, Ohara, Ryusei Ha, Saga Goryu and Sogetsu.
Between September and May, the Chapter meets, usually on the last Monday of each month, for a brief business meeting followed by a program. The programs include, but are not limited to Ikebana demonstrations, to bring fresh outlooks and insights to our studies.
Each school has an annual exhibition at the Japanese Garden Pavilion and, collectively, a group exhibition at the Chrysanthemum Show, an annual Japanese Garden event. We actively engage with the community to introduce Ikebana to people of all ages through demonstrations or hands-on learning activities. The Chapter also provides an arrangement for the tokonoma in the Japan Gallery at the Portland Art Museum (by a different school, each month, on a rotating basis.)
These continuous efforts by the Chapter, to cultivate and perpetuate Ikebana, are dedicated to the memory of Mrs Ellen Gordon Allen, founder of Ikebana International and to the memory of Mrs. Morris Schnitzer, founder of Portland Chapter 47.
